is that it&#8217;s about 3 times more efficient than an emulator.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at the bare Android hardware and its operating system stack:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4467 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Bare-Hardware-600x321.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Bare-Hardware-600x321.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Bare-Hardware-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Bare-Hardware.png 684w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Android runs a proprietary operating system, and all android &#8220;apps&#8221; runs on top of Java, leveraging android libraries for device and hardware access, as well as look and feel.<\/p>\n<p>An Android app runs on the native CPU at a ratio of 1:1, but Java is inefficient, and all Android apps run in Java.\u00a0 The final app &#8220;efficiency&#8221; on native hardware is about 0.5:1, or about 50%.<\/p>\n<p>When you install the android developer kit (ADK), it comes with a hardware emulator that runs on Windows.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4468\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Full-600x357.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Full-600x357.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Full-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Full-768x457.png 768w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Full.png 936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A hardware emulator emulates literally every function.\u00a0 It starts by building a virtual hardware layer, and then it emulates a virtual CPU.\u00a0 When the device &#8220;boots&#8221;, it loads a ROM image, and the CPU (virtual CPU) begins to process instructions.\u00a0 Eventually, the OS loads the User Interface (UI), and allows the Windows &#8211;&gt; Android user to load an Android application.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Windows is horribly inefficient.\u00a0 On top of this, an emulator running on top of Windows only becomes increasingly more inefficient.\u00a0 By the time you run a &#8220;native&#8221; Android app on a hardware emulator running on Windows, the efficiency is at or less than 10%.<\/p>\n<p>An &#8220;app player&#8221; skips the hardware emulation:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4470\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Player-600x302.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Player-600x302.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Player-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Player-768x386.png 768w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emulator_Player.png 939w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Because we skip the hardware layer, the emulation is 300% or more efficient than a hardware emulator.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;app&#8221; runs on Java, which runs on the native OS, in the context of the &#8220;app player&#8221; application.\u00a0 Device calls are not handled by &#8220;virtual hardware&#8221; &#8211; they are simply a call through Java to the underlying operating system.<\/p>\n<p>For a developer, the &#8220;app player&#8221; is a very powerful tool that can be used to help compile, prototype, and test an application much more efficiently than if one was to use a hardware emulator.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bluestacks-enters-the-scene\"><\/span>BlueStacks Enters the Scene<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>BlueStacks was one of the very first Android &#8220;app players&#8221;, if not the first.<\/p>\n<p>There are three main versions of BlueStacks:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bluestacks-beta-v\"><\/span>BlueStacks Beta (v&lt;2.0)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>BlueStacks &#8220;1&#8221; or BlueStacks &#8220;Beta&#8221; came with a fairly slick installer, and supported some predefined channels that were ostensibly the company&#8217;s revenue stream.<\/p>\n<p>Like any brand-new android device, you are prompted to link it to a Google account.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the hardware emulator, you quickly find that this is a mandatory step.<\/p>\n<p>BlueStacks 1 was fairly widely compatible, and ran fairly efficiently, even on older hardware.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bluestacks-2-v-2x\"><\/span>BlueStacks 2 (v 2.x)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the nicer features of BlueStacks, even version 1, was its auto-update facility.<\/p>\n<p>Auto-updating BlueStacks 1 was kind of nice, because you had a constant series of updates that would fix bugs or improve compatibility or performance.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, auto-update brought you (forcibly) BlueStacks version 2.<\/p>\n<p>BlueStacks version 2 sported a nice new interface.<\/p>\n<p>What was NOT nice about BlueStacks 2 was the fact that you couldn&#8217;t downgrade back to BS1.\u00a0 Even if you uninstalled BS2 and used your old BS1 installer, it would immediately download and install BS2.\u00a0 So now you&#8217;re stuck with BS2.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to several useless user interface components, such as a main page that was nothing but an ad banner, one of BS2&#8217;s main features was &#8220;BlueStacks TV&#8221; &#8211; a constant video ad that started automatically and played until you turned it off.\u00a0 Through the user interface, there was no way to disable it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this was reviled by the BlueStacks community, but their only response was &#8220;why would you want to turn it off?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Right.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a revenue stream for BlueStacks, so of course, why would THEY want you to want to turn it off?<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, some intrepid tinkerers figured out how to edit the configuration manually, to disable BSTV as well as some of BS2&#8217;s other annoying &#8220;features&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Like its predecessor, BS2 <em>required<\/em> a link to your Google account.<\/p>\n<p>BS2 also perpetually prompted you to sign up for a BlueStacks account.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t as snappy as BS1, but overall, it was more stable and more compatible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bluestacks-3-v-3x\"><\/span>BlueStacks 3 (v 3.x)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Having learned my lesson about BS1 auto-updating to BS2, I neutered BS2&#8217;s update feature.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, however, BS2 simply became old.<\/p>\n<p>As a developer, one needs access to the modern Android OS and its modern features.<\/p>\n<p>Since the version of Android is intrinsically linked to BlueStacks, there really isn&#8217;t a way to upgrade Android without upgrading BlueStacks itself.<\/p>\n<p>So I made the mistake of upgrading to BlueStacks 3.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s a good place to start my rant about the problems with BS3.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"problems-with-bluestacks-3\"><\/span>Problems With BlueStacks 3<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I should have known that I was in for a ride when the installer offered the &#8220;customize&#8221; option, only to learn that the &#8220;customize&#8221; option only lets you &#8220;customize&#8221; the data path.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4473\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-600x404.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-600x404.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install.png 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4474\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-Customize-600x404.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-Customize-600x404.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-Customize-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Install-Customize.png 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the first indications of a problem was during the installation process:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4476\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Installing-600x404.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Installing-600x404.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Installing-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Installing.png 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notice the &#8220;suggestion&#8221; at the bottom during installation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Disable your PC antivirus if it is interfering with installing BlueStacks<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is &#8220;developer mentality&#8221; at its finest.\u00a0 This blurb practically screams:\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/top-developer-mistakes\/#Mistake_#1:%C2%A0_%E2%80%9CIt_worked_on_my_machine.%E2%80%9D\">It works on my machine!<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s completely unacceptable to suggest that the user should <em>disable<\/em> a security feature just to run your crappy software.\u00a0 There are better ways to accomplish the same result, safely, by coding your installer properly.\u00a0 The last thing you want the user to do is to make their PC vulnerable (unless you just don&#8217;t care), and you simply can&#8217;t trust the user to turn it back on again!\u00a0 Not to mention, you don&#8217;t want to give the user the impression that it&#8217;s &#8220;OK&#8221; to turn off antivirus, willy-nilly, whenever some crappy software blows up their face.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>How about this, instead:\u00a0 WRITE A BETTER INSTALLER!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Upon completing the installation process, BlueStacks boots for the first (or second, or third) time.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike its predecessors, you might get a message that simply says &#8220;BlueStacks Engine failed to start&#8221;.\u00a0 As in, &#8220;BlueStacks failed to start.\u00a0 Oh well.&#8221;\u00a0 Not helpful.\u00a0 As a developer, you should NEVER show the user an error that says, &#8220;meh, something happened.&#8221;\u00a0 Every error message should be <em>meaningful<\/em>:\u00a0 &#8220;BlueStacks Engine failed to start&#8230;. BECAUSE&#8221;, or &#8220;here are some troubleshooting steps&#8221;, or &#8220;here, click this link for more information&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, a reboot seemed to fix it (lucky enough for me, to have figured this out on my own).<\/p>\n<p>So BS3 boots up, and you are immediately confronted with &#8220;Pika Points!!!!!&#8221;\u00a0 (??)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4481\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Startup-Pika-Points-600x389.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Startup-Pika-Points-600x389.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Startup-Pika-Points-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Startup-Pika-Points-768x498.png 768w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/BS3-Startup-Pika-Points.png 1006w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;ll soon find out, &#8220;Pika Points&#8221; is an integral part of your BS3 experience.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, check out that disclaimer at the bottom:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First boot may take up to 2-3 minutes depending upon your PC&#8217;s performance<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not the FIRST boot.\u00a0 It&#8217;s EVERY boot.<\/p>\n<p>BlueStacks 1 launched quickly &#8211; setting of 1.1 gig.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nice that you can CHANGE these settings, but any hardware change necessitates an almost 5 minute restart (NO THANKS!!)<\/p>\n<p>The other settings are marginally useful.\u00a0 Especially the &#8220;Boss Key&#8221; PC.\u00a0 Therefore, the problem is SOFTWARE.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Developer mentality:\u00a0 &#8220;The new platform is so much better that it requires more resources&#8221; bla bla bla<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The way to approach this from an architecture perspective, is to have both codebases available to the user, specifically to support older hardware, especially when your software &#8220;model&#8221; is to ONLY allow the most recent software version.<\/p>\n<p>If the user was allowed to download and install version 1, you could say &#8220;hey, try BlueStacks v1, it may run better on your hardware&#8221; (which is fair).\u00a0 However, the user CAN&#8217;T download and install v1, because ONLY v3 is available.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, if you wrote &#8220;enhancements&#8221; in v3 to the older codebase, then have a flag that can detect slower hardware and automatically disable them.<\/p>\n<p>Equally-important:\u00a0 If there are system-wide configuration changes that the user could make in order to boost performance, then provide instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Well, that &#8220;hardware upgrade&#8221; while other people make money off of you.<\/p>\n<p>And look&#8230; There is my name and my e-mail account, all set up for me.\u00a0 Without my explicit consent.\u00a0 And, they even made me a nickname!\u00a0 Without my explicit consent.<\/p>\n<p>My account screen admonishes me:\u00a0 &#8220;You are currently using a FREE account&#8221;, but it clearly wants me to upgrade to &#8220;BlueStacks Premium&#8221; for just $3.33\/mo.\u00a0 So what do I get for $40 a year?\u00a0 Apparently, my experience is ad-free (OK), and I can customize my wallpaper (?).\u00a0 I also get an assorted set of quest features.<\/p>\n<p>So after changing my name to &#8220;Bob Hope&#8221; activities.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;ve managed to rack up 330 &#8220;Pika Points&#8221;, which if I&#8217;m looking at this right, allows me to enter a raffle for a gaming mouse.<\/p>\n<p>So if a company is GIVING something away, ALWAYS know that they are making it up on the back end.\u00a0 Whether BlueStacks is selling my data or doing bitcoin mining in the background, I can&#8217;t be sure.\u00a0 But I CAN be sure they are using ME as a revenue stream.<\/p>\n<p>No thanks!<\/p>\n<p>I do some googling about how to disable my &#8220;Pika World&#8221; account.<\/p>\n<p>Just as with BlueStacks TV, there isn&#8217;t a way to do that.\u00a0 The company line is the same:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why would you want to disable the Pika World feature?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well&#8230; there were some parents and other folks who had legitimate complaints, that their IRL (In Real Life) neighbors were able to &#8220;check in&#8221; on their child&#8217;s Pika World account, visit, and even leave comments.\u00a0 As a parent, exposing your child without some kind of controls is a scary thing.<\/p>\n<p>More googling, and apparently, I will just be signed up for crappy PIKA WORLD for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n<p>I installed a couple of apps just to test performance, one of which was Caves (Roguelike), a 2D RPG scroller, which I also play on my phone, and therefore gives me a decent baseline.\u00a0 I also installed some personal projects that I&#8217;ve previously compiled and deployed to BS2, and which run just fine under BS2.<\/p>\n<p>PERFORMANCE WAS HORRIBLE.<\/p>\n<p>App load times were very slow, and the UI was horribly laggy.\u00a0 Now keep in mind, these are all apps that I&#8217;ve downloaded to BS2, and ran just fine under BS2, on this very same &#8220;old slow&#8221; (BS3) are unwanted by the community, and therefore hated by the community because they can&#8217;t be disabled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/give-the-user-base-what-they-want\">Always give the user base what they want.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you stop listening to your users, you will eventually be irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"nox-app-player\"><\/span>NOX App Player<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now that I&#8217;ve decided to sever my experience with BlueStacks forever, I need a good replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, now there are some decent alternatives out there.<\/p>\n<p>I downloaded and installed NOX App Player:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4499\" src=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/NOX-Installer-600x517.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/NOX-Installer-600x517.png 600w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/NOX-Installer-300x259.png 300w, https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/NOX-Installer.png 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The installer screen and installation process were similar to BlueStacks 3.\u00a0 Unlike the BS3 installer, you get some useful &#8220;customize&#8221;
