{"id":3184,"date":"2015-12-03T23:19:23","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T05:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/?p=3184"},"modified":"2015-12-03T23:19:23","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T05:19:23","slug":"pick-the-bigger-of-the-two-and-shut-the-f___-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/pick-the-bigger-of-the-two-and-shut-the-f___-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Pick the bigger of the two, and shut the f___ up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This one is fairly recent, but I thought it deserved its own post.<\/p>\n<p>After working on my son&#8217;s car, I went off on a rant about how the American car industry seems to go out of its way to use a bunch of mix-matched fasteners &#8212; see my <a href=\"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/why-security-screws-are-ineffective-normal-screws-are-problematic-and-how-to-fix-both\/\">&#8220;rant on fasteners&#8221; here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, removing ONE part on a 2001 Ford Explorer required an 8mm socket, a 1\/2&#8243; wrench, a 7\/16&#8243; wrench, and a screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p>WHY??<\/p>\n<p>After spewing a string of expletives about the lack of quality in Ford&#8217;s engineering staff, my final statement on the topic was this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;When presented with two, similar fastener options, pick the larger of the two, and shut the f___ up!&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meaning, don&#8217;t take it upon yourself to pick the &#8220;super-optimized&#8221; option &#8212; pick the MOST COMMON option instead.\u00a0 There is no reason why all of the fasteners in question could not have been 12mm, which is approximately 0.47&#8243;.\u00a0 This would have allowed the part in question to be removed using ONE TOOL.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moral of the story:\u00a0 Standardization is more important than optimization.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Something super-optimized becomes inefficient.\u00a0 Stick to standards.<\/p>\n<p>My son thought the thesis statement, &#8220;pick the larger of the two, and shut the f___ up&#8221; was hilarious, so this post is dedicated to him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one is fairly recent, but I thought it deserved its own post.
