{"id":262,"date":"2013-12-21T14:01:09","date_gmt":"2013-12-21T20:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/?p=262"},"modified":"2014-02-06T20:40:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-07T02:40:06","slug":"microsoft-tag-sucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/justinparrtech.com\/JustinParr-Tech\/microsoft-tag-sucks\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221; sucks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&lt;rant&gt;<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221; sucks!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What is Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221;?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;tag&#8221; is a proprietary barcode format, developed by Microsoft.<br \/>\n<!--more Click here to read more!--><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Why is Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221; important?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t! \u00a0There are other, standard, non-proprietary barcode formats in use today, such as QR Code, that are capable of doing the same things!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Why is Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221; bad?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Proprietary format &#8212; can&#8217;t be used with other barcode readers, so I have to download a separate &#8220;tag&#8221; application from &#8220;http:\/\/gettag.mobi&#8221;. \u00a0I already have at least 2 other barcode scanners &#8212; WHY should I have to download 1 more? \u00a0Why don&#8217;t those other barcode scanners support &#8220;tag&#8221; format? \u00a0BECAUSE IT&#8217;S PROPRIETARY, and they don&#8217;t what \/ need the hassle, nor the license fees! \u00a0Why pay for something &#8220;free&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Privacy concerns &#8212; The &#8220;tag&#8221; scanner, by default, sends location data. \u00a0In addition, it creates a unique device ID that can&#8217;t be disabled, and shares the device ID with both Microsoft and 3rd parties &#8212; meaning, you can be uniquely and individually tracked, whenever you scan a &#8220;tag&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Information remains in the &#8220;Microsoft Cloud&#8221; &#8212; Whatever content is in the &#8220;tag&#8221; is only viewable within the &#8220;tag&#8221; application. \u00a0Sharing a tag, literally means sharing a tag LABEL, that the recipient can&#8217;t access except through the &#8220;tag&#8221; website. \u00a0Meaning, even the RECIPIENT&#8217;s use of the information can be tracked, and likely, uniquely identified.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What can I do?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Provide feedback to manufacturers and vendors that use &#8220;tag&#8221;. \u00a0Let them know that your experience with &#8220;tag&#8221; was negative, and negatively influenced your experience with the product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Vote with your dollars. \u00a0Don&#8217;t buy products and services that include &#8220;http:\/\/gettag.mobi&#8221; and funky barcodes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why use a proprietary format, requiring a proprietary application, that sends personal information to Microsoft as well as the 3rd party?<\/p>\n<p>Use QR Codes instead: \u00a0Open standard, supported by all barcode scanners, uses native applications (such as contacts and browser) instead of requiring &#8220;tag viewer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Be vocal about your position (for or against) &#8220;tag&#8221; format, and let people know WHY. \u00a0Vote with your dollars, and be sure to let manufacturers and vendors know that their use of &#8220;tag&#8221; influences your buying decision.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&lt;\/rant&gt;<\/span><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&lt;rant&gt; Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221; sucks! &nbsp; What is Microsoft &#8220;tag&#8221;?
